Yezidis of Afrin are fasting secretly, fearing the opposition militants’ revenge
Yesterday, Thursday, the Yezidis of the occupied region of Afrin ended their obligatory fast, “Eze fast”, in secret, for fear of retaliation by the so-called “Syrian National Army” militants and the mockery of the families of the militants who were settled in Yezidi villages in order to change their demographics.
The “Eze fast” begins with the Yezidis every year on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays before the beginning of the first Friday of the eastern month of December. The solar calendar that follows the Gregorian calendar by thirteen days.
During the three days, the Yezidis abstain from food and drink from five in the morning until five minutes after sunset.
Since the Turkish forces and opposition militants took control of the Afrin region, Ezdina Foundation has documented dozens of violations committed by opposition militants against the Yazidi component, including killings and kidnappings. It is worth noting that the number of Yazidis in the Afrin region before its occupation was approximately 35,000 people, according to unofficial statistics. However, since the Turkish occupation forces and the militias of the Syrian opposition loyal to them took control of the region on March 18, 2018, only less than 1,000 people remained in it, according to a secret census conducted By the Ezdina team in 2020.
